Steve Wright visits Bristol’s newest contemporary artspace.
It’s safe to say that Tina Brown’s impact on the Bristol art scene has been immediate. Arriving in Bristol last May from Hampshire, where she had run her contemporary artspace Courtyard Gallery for over 10 years, Tina found a new home for her gallery at Paintworks, the creative workspace community on Bath Road. Throughout the second half of last year, the newly Bristol-based Courtyard Gallery programmed some of the city’s more ambitious contemporary art exhibitions, introducing Bristolians to artists like Paul Bennett, creator of bold, thickly daubed abstracts, and Nicholas Lees, with his eye-catching ceramic and gold leaf sculptures. An impressive beginning to her Bristol career, in short: but Tina has not stopped there.
