Over the last 10 years, I’ve coached many people who have been promoted from one level to the next. And one of the most common themes that has emerged in such coaching engagements is the client’s need to be more ‘strategic’ and less ‘operational’.  But in reality, what does that actually mean?

What I’ve noticed in these engagements is that clients are likely to be excited about becoming more strategic, but they are unclear what they have to do and just as importantly stop doing  – most of it behavioural – in their day-to-day activities.

In this month’s Harvard Business Review, Paul J.H. Schoemaker, Steve Krupp, and Samantha Howland explain exactly what the components of strategic thinking are in their excellent piece Strategic Leadership: The Essential Skillsso that the reader can assess for him/herself their own specific strengths and weaknesses.

They identify six skills of strategic thinking:
